Cerita sebelumnya
(Previous story)

You can read it on part 1part 2part 3part 4part 5part 6, and part 7.
We visited Borobudur temple and shopped in Malioboro before we went back to Jakarta, finally... we've passed three frustating days in our live as the homestay program was messed up by Merapi's eruption.

Woi, bangun lo semua!
-
Hey, get up guys!

Pagi hari
(In the morning)

Gue ngemil Chitato. Untung dapet sisa snack yang kemarin dikasih, gue makan 2 kotak. Lumayan buat ganjel laper. Pegel juga yah tidur di dalem bis.

Woke up and found the buses already reached West Java, we stopped took a rest and buying some goods in Subang. That morning, we didn't have any breakfast so I was so starving, luckily I didn't eat all of my snacks so I ate them.

Justin, Tika, Cella.

Muka si KC HAHAHAHA!
-
Look at KC's face, LOL.

Muka najong bangun tidur belom cuci muka semua.
-
Our oily faces in the morning.

Singkat cerita, jam setengah 9 sampe di sekolah lagi! Gile capeeeeeeeeeeekkk.

To be short, 8.30 AM we arrived at school! Super tired at that time as I spent my time in bus only for sleeping. Me and friends had a lunch in small restaurant near the school and went back home together with friends by Robert's car. Then, I just took a bath, washed my hair, and..... slept as long as I could.

Keesokan harinya
(At the next day)

My dad was watching TV news, and I shocked when I passed the TV and watched it too. I'd just arrived in Jakarta on Friday, and at that time the TV said Mount Merapi was exploding and it was greater than when I'd been in Muntilan! Local people there were evacuated by the local goverment, and lot of people became victims as Merapi's hot cloud glided from the top of the mountain and swiped the houses there. The place I had homestay was cleared, and the villages were covered by ash which was 5 centimetres thick.

The news showed Malioboro on Saturday, where me and friends shopped on Thursday. All of the shops were closed as Jogja had ash raining and all of the things there also covered with it, only few of vehicles still passed on Malioboro. All of the accesses to go to Merapi were closed by traffic polices, but the vehicles for evacuating local people there were allowed to go uphill. Villages in radius 20 kilometres from top of the mountain had to be cleared to anticipate more victims of hot cloud, or usually known as "wedhus gembel" for the locals.

Gile...... gua sampe bengong nonton tivi waktu itu. Ini kenapa begini?
WTF what was going on there, I couldn't say a word when I watched the news.

(Later, I remembered the night when we were in retreat house)

At that time, we were told to think about the things happened there, I don't remember all of the parts, but I write all of the things I remember.

Living in Merapi means less facilities you could get. Local people there always go by feet, as I told you in part 3, Sekar (my homestay parent's daughter) went to kindergarten by walking for kilometres. It's so rare to see local people have vehicles.

I just curious if they're sick and need to go to doctor or even be hospitalized. I just didn't see where a clinic was, even the public facilities there, the only one I recognised just Gubug Selo Merapi. I even didn't see small shop there, so I was so confused to guess where they have to go if they want to buy something like daily needs.

Terus salah satu induk semang sih cerita sama kita.

One of the homestay parents shared some stories for us. She shared her struggle to pay the school tuition fee every month, when she said how much she has to pay every month, it's just not as comparable as our tuition fee every month. You know, the standart of price in there is very low if you compare it with Jakarta's standart of price.

The condition of children there with us was so contrast, but the homestay parent said her priority is her children's education. About their tutition fee, it's just comparable for enjoying your weekend in Jakarta.

Other things I saw there, there's no lighting in the street, and many else you could see why living in village is so hard for the people who live in a city.

For them, the exploding Merapi is just like two sides of a coin.
Its exploding materials fertilize the soil, so the soil in Merapi is one of the most fertile lands in the world, as Merapi has a 3-5 years cycle to explode.

Begitulah kehidupan di Merapi, yah jadi inget lirik lagunya Koes Plus yang di lagu "Kolam Susu", kalau orang-orang bilang tanah kita tanah surga, tongkat kayu dan batu jadi tanaman.

I just remember like a lyric of Indonesian song titled "Kolam Susu" or "Pond of Milk", it says our land is land of heaven, even a branch and stone can be a plant here.

Everybody knows if goverment here still don't care about infrastructure developments in villages, plus the bad bureaucracy here. But, if Merapi will explode soon, local goverment will repair the main roads in there quickly, like repairing the road with asphalt (part 1) so the cars don't face a rocky road and easily evacuate the local people.

If the main roads aren't repaired, it means the president will be angry to the local goverment, as usually the exploding mounts here will be the national headline news, and central goverment will focus on that thing. One of the homestay parent said to us, if Merapi never explodes anymore, so the goverment won't ever repair the main roads in Merapi. Even they repair the road, they just use low quality asphalt, as in 2-3 years the road will be rocky again.

Tapi entah kenapa, mereka kalau disuruh ngungsi, mereka ga mau turun....
(But hey, do you know when Merapi explodes, local people won't evacuate themselves)

I just realise it, in part 4, we were so panic and went to Gubug Selo Merapi, but all of our homestay parents didn't evacuate themselves like we did. My homestay parent just carried her child, locked the door, and just went to her brother's house. Even her brother just accompanied us to the main road and just went back home.

Sementara kita semua panik ga jelas gitu, terus sampe doa bareng segala di sono, terus malah si Eban bilang, "Duh ya Tuhan, kalo sekarang Tuhan mau cabut nyawa saya di sini, ambil deh...." ckck. Kampret emang, ga taunya setelah dia ngomong kayak gitu, dia duluan dievakuasi turun ke bawa, nyawanya ga jadi diambil deh LOL.

Meanwhile, we were so panic there, we prayed together, and even one of my friend said, "God, just take my soul now". But what? He was evacuated earlier than me, so God didn't take his soul LOL.

Dan, pas kita semua heboh nunggu evakuasi di Gubug Selo, si JoChris yang ternyata rumah induk semangnya tepat di seberang Gubug Selo (tapi naik dikit lewat tanjakan), terus ga taunya dia malah dipanggilin sama si induk semang dari rumahnya...
Induk semang : Nak, ayo sini makan malem dulu sebelum pergi.
JoChris : Iya 'Bu. *ngacir lagi balik terus makan malem, LOL!!!!*

When we were so panic in Gubug Selo, JoChris, which his homestay house was just across the Gubug Selo, was called by his homestay parent from the house.
Homestay parent : Child, come on, have a dinner before you go!
JoChris : Okay. *so he went to his homestay house for a dinner LOL*

All of the local people were so calm, I think they're just get used to with this situation. Like Ibu Suliah's brother, he was just watching TV and said the news was just kinda hiperbolic and wasn't like what they felt there.

Induk semang : NAK! LAGI HUJAN ABU LOOOHHH! SINI KAMU KELUAR NONTON YUK BARENG IBU!

Even my friend when the ash was raining at the night...
His homestay parent : KID! LOOK IT'S ASH RAINING! GO OUTSIDE AND SEE IT WITH ME KID!

Hmm, sebenernya dengan mereka yang ga mau turun gunung kalo Merapi udah meletus, bikin gua khawatir sih... udah kayak gini mereka semua beneran udah turun belom yah padahal udah hujan abu setebal 5 cm di sono. =______=

With that kinda situation, I'm worried of them, has they evacuated themselves when the news said the ash raining there makes 5 centimetres thick there.

Mungkin.....
(Maybe....)

I don't speculate anything, but I guess they're all brave to live in Merapi and never scare of it because I heard a sentence from on of the homestay team which was said when we came to Merapi and the night when we were in retreat house.

Bapak tim edukasi : Kalo sedang kayak gini, wis Merapi sedang punya gawe (= maksud).
Homestay team : You know, Merapi is just having a purpose.

Entah Merapi punya gawe apa.
I don't know what purpose it is.

#respect

As I'm writing this Merapi travel series, I google where the hot cloud glided, and news said the hot cloud glided to south and southwest of the mount, which was the place where I had homestay. And for your information, a week after we went back to Jakarta, the famous traditional gatekeeper of Mount Merapi, Mbah Marijan, died because of the hot cloud from the mount he had been keeping for years. #respect

I hoped Ibu Suliah, Sekar, Rio, Bapak and his wife and kid also Mbah Yoso and every good people I met there just fine now. Little bit regret for not taking pictures together with them.

Now, when I'm so down, I remember the homestay story, and it encourages me as I can see my life is still better then theirs. I miss them all. I hope the goverment care about improving the local people's quality of life.

(At the last night in there)

Pas penutupan, salah satu bapak dari tim edukasi pun bilang sama kita,
Bapak : Kami tak menyangka kalau ternyata Gunung Merapi meletus seperti sekarang, sehingga menggagalkan jadwal kita.

At closing, one of the homestay team said to us,
Him : We don't expect if Mount Merapi explodes like now, and messed up our schedule. We, from The Merapi Education Team, deeply apologize for this situation we cannot prevent, so we offer the second homestay if you want.

But Ms. Yo, as the representative of teachers, said...
Ms. Yo : We kindly refused your offer, we are the ones who must thank you and all of the team, for giving the unforgettable experience which other students from other schools can feel.

Bener sih, dipikir-pikir kayaknya baru gua doang sekolah lagi live-in tiba-tiba gunung meletus. Dan ga akan terlupakan kan? Sekarang aja gua lagi masukin blog nih.

The last night in Merapi was closed with applause, and silence as the students slept for going home at the next day. Really, it's just unforgettable.

Gimana nggak? Pas hari pertama baru nyampe di Merapi langsung disambut hujan abu dan batu, sehari setelah kita semua dari Jogja, seluruh Malioboro ditutup debu, Borobudur dan tempat wisata lainnya seperti keraton ditutup untuk umum, dan akses jalan menuju lereng Merapi semua ditutup.

Sometimes, I felt like this is just like a "planned" coincidence. The first day we arrived in Merapi, we were welcomed by ash and stone raining. A day after we left Jogja, Malioboro and all of the travel sites like Borobudur and keraton were closed, and also the accesses to the Merapi.

Semoga sih cuma perasaan gua doang.

I hope it's just my feeling. And I hope Merapi's purpose brings goodness for the people.

Makasi yah Merapi buat pengalaman hidupnya.
